RODANTHE, N.C. — The state Department of Transportation on Friday closed N.C. Highway 12 on Pea Island because of flooding.

Strong northeast winds and abnormally high tides caused waves to wash over the dune line onto the highway, DOT officials said. Similar conditions were expected to affect the highway through the weekend, which could lead to intermittent closures, they said.

The DOT will waive ferry fees for residents on Ocracoke Island this weekend who need to use the Cedar Island or Swan Quarter ferries. People using the Hatteras ferry were advised to allow extra time or take an alternate route to avoid N.C. 12.
