A 90-foot ferris wheel being constructed at the corner of East Hargett and Fayetteville streets in downtown Raleigh created excitement Friday morning.

Crews began putting the ride together around 9 a.m. It will take five hours to get the entire ride set up.

The attraction is part of this year's First Night Raleigh celebration, which is taking on a French theme. Tonight on WRAL News, Ken Smith will be taking one of the first rides on the wheel.

WRAL photographer Robert Meikle shoots the ferris wheel as it is being built.
