Firefighting effort creates smoky conditions in Croatan National Forest

Posted — UpdatedCARTERET COUNTY, N.C. — Visibility could be compromised in Carteret County Sunday as the U.S. Forest Service, along with state and local firefighters, fights a wildfire.
Officials said the blaze began with a lightning strike Thursday at about 3 p.m. in the area south of Millis Road and west of 9 Mile Road.
Firefighters planned a burnout operation in the area Sunday afternoon and closed 9 Mile Road to traffic due to the dense smoke and low visibility. The heaviest smoke was in the area of 9 Mile Road from N.C. Highway 24 to Roberts Road.
Motorists were urged to use headlights, leave plenty of distance between vehicles and be prepared to stop in the case of suddenly smoky conditions in the area through Sunday evening.
