WHISPERING PINES, N.C. — A firefighter was hospitalized after the ceiling of burning home outside Pinehurst collapsed early Tuesday, according to fire officials.

Firefighters were called out to the fire on Countess Court in Whispering Pines around 2:30 a.m., said Frank Stanley, with Circle V Fire Station.Bright flames were pouring out of the roof when crews arrived.

The injured firefighter, whose name was not released, was taken to Moore County Regional Hospital. He was expected to be OK, Stanley said.

"The house is probably totaled, but we made a really good stop on it," Stanley said. He said that they managed to save the bottom floor of the house and that a lot of furnishings and other belongings would be salvageable.

Crews from seven local fire departments, Whispering Pines police and Moore County EMS responded.
