ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Authorities in Rocky Mount were trying Thursday to determine what caused a fire that consumed a furniture store.

Flames were showing from Jeff's Furniture Warehouse at 220 Marigold St. when firefighters arrived about 4:30 p.m.

Firefighters remained on the scene into Thursday night, monitoring hot spots. They had a difficult time trying to get the fire out because of the furniture and the mattresses that fueled it.

“You couldn't even see the building at some points,” witness Tina Lynch said.

Jeff's Furniture Warehouse on Marigold Street went up in flames just before 4:30 Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters said one employee was inside when the fire broke out. Someone walking by saw the smoke and got her out safely, they said.

Division Chief David English said he believes the fire started in the back of the building, an area with a lot of furniture in storage.

“The building was filed with a lot of furniture and mattresses so we had a very heavy fire load, which created a very rapid fire with a lot of heat,” English said.

Firefighters estimated that they used at least 20,000 gallons of water fighting the fire.
