Find What You're Searching For

Well, yesterday was Easter, and children everywhere were searching for brightly colored plastic eggs filled with goodies. Easter egg hunts were huge deals in my family growing up. Every year the hiding places became more and more elaborate and difficult. Pink eggs were slipped down into pink flowers, hidden so well that the frustrated bees were the only giveaways of where they were. Green eggs were clipped onto the small, soft limbs of trees with brand new leaves, blending in perfectly. Eggs were hidden so well that it seemed like every year there would be an egg or two that we just couldn't find. Sometimes we would find them in the following Easter's egg hunt, sometimes it was the lawn mower that found them, sending plastic, neon confetti out into the yard that we had to clean up. I don't know about you, but I can relate to a kid running around like a chicken with its head cut off searching for Easter eggs. If you've ever watched kids hunting Easter eggs, you know the first thing they do when they pick one up is shake it to see if there is something inside. At my house you better believe that if you found it easily, it was empty. We all hope that when we find what we're searching for, we aren't left feeling empty, so we tend to search for big, fulfilling things like love and happiness. Sometimes we find them, sometimes we don't, but when we look back, we often find that the journey, the hunt, was the important part that was shaping us into who we are now. And so, in the spirit of Easter egg hunts, here are 7 books that just might help you find what you're searching for.

Finding our purpose in life is something that we all tend to struggle with at some point, some of us more than once. The Purpose Driven Life is not a new release, but it is still very relevant and even if you haven't quite found your purpose yet, this book will give you tips on how to live with purpose.

Something you might have found (see what I did there?) in that mouthful of a title is the word "happiness." That's something we all spend a lot of time searching for, right? Full disclosure, I have not read this book. But, I did spend a lot of time listening to my wife talk about this one after she read it, so I feel like I can vouch for it. Part memoir, part personal growth, this is one woman's report of what happened when she spent a year trying to be happier.

Okay, last time I choose a book with what you're searching for in the title, I promise. I don't know about you, but I try to search regularly for wonder, or at least that sense of wonder. It's something I never want to lose. This book will leave you in awe of the natural world through some really amazing writing. Each essay is poetic, but not in a pretentious way, and is relatable in ways you just don't expect.

If you are looking for insight, I'll forgive you if the first place you looked was not in a book by a comedian about hiking. But now you know, Where the Deer and the Antelope Play is not a book about hiking, it's about the thoughts that hike through the mind of Offerman while he's on the trail. From consumerism to our relationship with nature, to farming, to playing outside, this book will get you thinking about things you might not have thought about before, and will probably give you some insight on a lot of new thoughts.
Another one of the "big ones" in terms of things we are searching for is love, and well, this is a little bit of a different take on that. Usually when we say that we mean love in a romantic sense, but what does it mean to really love other people, always? Bob Goff is one of my favorite pastors, and in Everybody Always, he talks to the Christian community that is called to love everyone about what that really looks like. Through his fantastic storytelling, he gives examples, advice, calling on his own experiences and failures when it comes to loving people.

If you are searching for a love of nature, or just nature in general, let me invite you into this insightful and laugh-out-loud funny journey of a doctor rediscovering his love of America, after twenty years in Britain, on the Appalachian Trail. This is a long-time favorite of mine, and I recommend it OFTEN!

Last but not least on the list of things people are searching for is laughs, and while you can find them in spurts in all of the books listed above, only Subpar Parks has them on literally every page. On each page, there is an actual online review of a national park, stating the ridiculous reasons the reviewer didn't enjoy the park. Absolutely hilarious!

When you look at my list, you probably notice that it all points back to God, my wife, and nature because, well, that's where I go when I am searching for something! Hopefully one of these books jumps out at you and helps you find what you're searching for! If none of them stood out to you this time, that's ok, come on down to Quail Ridge Books and go wild like a kid at an Easter egg hunt while searching for a great read.
