Fayetteville shooting is man's third brush with law

David William Covington was on electronic monitored house arrest awaiting trial for a February 2011 murder charge and was not allowed any weeapons, his mother told WRAL News.

Nonetheless, police said, he shot Jason McKnight, 29, of the 800 block of Wilbon Drive. McKnight was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where he was expected to make a full recovery from a gunshot wound.

Police didn't explain why Covington might have shot McKnight or the relationship between the two.

After neighbors reported hearing gunshots, Covington barricaded himself inside a home in the 1300 block of Turnpike Road Friday afternoon. He surrendered to police after about two hours. He is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, attempted first-degree murder and attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon. Covington was being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center on a $1 million secured bond.

Covington is no stranger to gun charges. He is awaiting trial on a second-degree murder charge for a 2011 shooting at 213-B Colonial Drive in Fayetteville. In December 2007, he was one of four people charged after Bobby Eugene Clemmons was shot and dropped off at the emergency entrance to Highsmith Rainey Hospital.
