FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville police are investigating after they said a 3-year-old girl died from injuries sustained at the hands of her father Tuesday morning.

Fayetteville police said that officers responded to 520 Regency Drive at about 9:15 a.m. after receiving a report of an unresponsive child.

Investigators determined that the girl had unspecified injuries inflicted by her father, Jamarkus Meshawn Smith, 26. The girl was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where she died.

On Wednesday, neighbors were still disturbed at what authorities said they found.

"It's killing me, yes it is," said neighbor Adam Glen.

Smith was arrested and charged with felony child abuse. He was being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center under $1 million secured bond and is scheduled to make a first court appearance on Dec. 16.

Police said that they will also review a child death investigation from February 2014 that occurred at the house and involved Smith. That incident was initially ruled to be Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Anybody with information concerning either incident is asked to call Fayetteville police at 910-818-3468 or Crime Stoppers at 910-483-8477.
