Fayetteville homicide suspect re-captured

Police said officers saw David Lee Hopkins III, 26, in the yard of a home in the 100 block of Post Avenue Monday evening and caught him after a short chase. He was given a $100,000 secured bond and placed in the Cumberland County jail.

Police had sent out an alert for Hopkins earlier Monday, saying that he had violated the terms of his pretrial release bond by leaving his Bartow Drive without authorization.

Hopkins was arrested Feb. 27, 2011, and charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill.

Hopkins was charged in connection with the Feb. 26, 2011, attack on two brothers, Deshawn Francis and Delmar Francis, who were shot near the intersection of Tokay and Meadowsweet drives. Both victims were transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where Delmar Francis died as a result of his gunshot wound.

At the time of his arrest in Delmar Francis' death, Hopkins was on probation January 2010 break-in and larceny convictions, according to state Division of Adult Correction records.

Between 2004 and 2010, he spent more than three years behind bars for nine convictions, including conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
