Fayetteville high school mourns teens killed in wrecks

Humphrey, a junior at Cape Fear High, died. The two passengers, Branson Hayes and Spencer Faircloth, were injured.

"Once a member of the Colt family, always a member," Principal Lee Spruill said Wednesday. 

Humphrey's funeral was Tuesday, and hundreds of people came out to remember him.

Spruill, who has known Humphrey since he was a child, said the teen was a gifted athlete and a good kid.

"I saw him at all the games," Spruill said. "He was the type of kid who always came up to you and said hello to you – a 'yes, sir' and 'no, sir' type of child."

Humphrey shined on the baseball team and football team, but he also got good grades and showed up to church every Sunday, Spruill said.

"It's not every day you get to see the star shortstop or a star wide receiver up on stage in the church drama on Sunday," he said. "It makes you feel good."

When Spruill learned about the crash, he couldn't help but cry, he said.

"I was completely devastated, and there's one thing, as a principal, you can't stand," he said. "You can't see your students, your kids, upset."

Humphrey was a proud Christian and a good role model for his fellow students.

"I have a 4-year-old son. If he turns out anything like Cole Humphrey, I'd say I was pretty successful," Spruill said. 

Locklear's funeral is scheduled for Thursday.
