FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fraud detectives are asking for the public’s help to identify a man wanted for scamming an elderly woman out of $14,000 on Oct. 11.

The unknown man approached the woman and said there was a bag of unclaimed money waiting to be claimed, according to authorities. The man and woman then traveled to several banks withdrawing money, opening accounts and cashing checks.

The woman was then taken to the Holiday Inn on Owen Drive where she was asked to wait for the man to return with her profits. The man left with her money and never returned, officials said.

The man is described as a white male, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, 170 pounds with a thin beard and thinning hair. His hair was short on top and longer on the sides.

The police department has not released the name of the woman.

Anyone with information regarding the identity of the man should contact the Fayetteville Police Department at 910-433-1856. To remain anonymous and be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward, contact Crime Stoppers at 910-483-8477.
