FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A fire destroyed a Fayetteville condominium building early Wednesday, leaving two dozen people and their pets without a home.

Authorities said the fire broke out in an eight-unit building at 579 Winding Creek Road shortly before 2 a.m. Everyone at home at the time escaped safely.

Seventeen adults and seven children, with two pets, were displaced after their homes were too badly damaged to live in, authorities said.

Red Cross volunteers were helping them find temporary shelter and giving them food and clothing.

The cause of the fire hasn't been determined.
