Fayetteville attorney charged with embezzling $2,000
A Fayetteville attorney was charged Wednesday with embezzling money from the Cumberland County Democratic Men's Club, the sheriff's office said.

Phillip Hunter Gilfus, 32, of 727 Duck Court, surrendered to authorities and was released from the Cumberland County jail on a $2,000 secured bond. He is charged with one count of embezzlement.
According to investigators, Gilfus embezzled $2,132 from the Cumberland County Democratic Men's Club between Nov. 15, 2011, and July 19, 2012, by writing checks made payable to himself.
Gilfus was the club treasurer at the time, and he wrote 10 checks on an account signed to Capital Bank, investigators said.
Gilfus, a former Cumberland County commissioner, ran unsuccessfully for a North Carolina House seat in November.
