Family of man killed by Franklin deputy files lawsuit
The family of a man struck and killed by a deputy’s patrol car on New Year's Eve has filed a lawsuit against the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Crystal Mitchell was on a non-emergency call on New Year's Eve when she struck and killed Marcus Coppedge, 23, on N.C. Highway 39 in Ingleside.
The family claims Mitchell was negligent when she hit Coppedge. They are seeking more than $10,000 in damages.
Mitchell was traveling more than 10 miles over the speed limit and her lights were not on when she hit Coppedge, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
The Highway Patrol’s report also showed that Coppedge was intoxicated at the time.
Franklin County Sheriff Pat Green said Mitchell was distracted by a group of men gathered in front of a nearby convenience store at the time of the accident.
The Highway Patrol investigated the crash and no charges were filed against Mitchell. She was reinstated.
Franklin County paid for Coppedge’s funeral.
