FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A man who impersonated a physician at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville is in prison in Tennessee after police there arrested him on a parole violation, authorities said Friday.

Daniel Ray Stewart, 24, pleaded guilty in November to misdemeanor charges of practicing medicine without a license and was placed on probation for a year, including electronic monitoring by the North Carolina Department of Correction.

Probation documents show Stewart told a Fayetteville taxi service on Thanksgiving Day that he was a doctor and needed a patient to be taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. The taxi operator became suspicious and didn't make the trip.

DOC officials said they believe Stewart then broke off his electronic ankle bracelet and fled North Carolina.

Stewart was arrested in Nashville on Dec. 3. Tennessee authorities revoked his parole from an earlier conviction in that state.
