Ex-Spring Lake employee charged with embezzlement
A Cumberland County grand jury has indicted a former Spring Lake water department employee on charges that she stole $21,625 in customer payments in 2007 and 2008.

Spring Lake's finance office discovered irregularities with water department records last year. The case was turned over to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, and the State Bureau of Investigation was eventually brought in to look at the case.
The town hasn't recovered any of the missing money, officials said.
The case is the latest controversy for Spring Lake, which had its police department stripped of all law enforcement powers two months ago when two senior officers were arrested on a variety of charges.
