HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — A former Orange County Board of Education member has been placed on probation for two years after pleading guilty to embezzlement, authorities said.

Dennis Whitling was charged in February with obtaining property by false pretense, corporate malfeasance and obstruction of justice. The charges stem from the theft of $115,000 from a Durham law firm, police said.

Whitling resigned his post on the school board when he was charged. He had served for four years and had been chairman for the past two years.

The State Bar also has disbarred him, authorities said.
