DURHAM, N.C. — North Carolina Central University officials canceled all afternoon and evening classes and on-campus activities Thursday.

The university sent employees home at 1:30 p.m. after a fire at the construction site for the Latham Parking Deck, on the northeast corner of Lincoln and Lawson streets, knocked out power to much of the campus.

Duke Energy crews restored power just before 4 p.m., but the air conditioning remained off in several buildings, officials said.

Classes and campus activities were expected to resume as normal Friday morning.

A Duke Energy spokeswoman said the utility dealt with an additional outage near Durham Regional Hospital where a branch fell on a power line. More than 800 customers in that part of town were without power for less than an hour during the afternoon, spokeswoman Shirley Moore said.
