Beware: Zombies are coming to the Bull City, and it's all-out combat with humans. Humans vs. Zombies, or HvZ, is part of The Escapist Expo this weekend.

Here's how the Durham-based website focused on the videogame and entertainment industry describes its HVZ event.

HvZ - The Event

Humans vs. Zombies (HvZ) is a game of moderated tag commonly played on college campuses, and now at the Escapist Expo! Human players must remain vigilant and defend themselves with socks and dart blasters to avoid being tagged by the growing zombie horde.

Objective

The Zombies win if they tag all of the humans. The Humans win if they can survive Escapist Expo.

How Do I Play?

All players start as humans, except for the original zombies, who are randomly chosen at the beginning of the game.
The zombies try to tag human players and eat their brains. The humans try to survive - they can stun a zombie by shooting them with a dart blaster or throwing a sock at them.
Zombies wear bandannas on their heads. Humans wear bandannas on their arms.
When a human is tagged they move their bandanna from their arm to their head and begin eating brains.

When a zombie is stunned with a sock or dart launcher they are out of the game for 10 minutes. While stunned, zombies should wear their bandanna around their neck.

Safe Zones

Humans vs. Zombies will be taking place throughout the expo except in Safe Zones. These include:

Scheduled events such as panels or presentations.

Businesses unaffiliated with Escapist Expo.

Safety Rules

Rules created for the safety of all players are strictly enforced. Violation of safety rules will result in a ban from the game.

  • Don’t run in the street.
  • Don’t throw socks at people who aren’t playing.
  • Be respectful of the rest of the expo.
  • Don’t touch any live electrical conduits or do anything stupid in general.
  • Don't play in the Safe Zones
  • Follow the Golden Rule

Everyone plays Humans vs. Zombies to have fun, and the rules of HvZ only exist because we agree they do. That’s why the most important rule of Humans vs. Zombies is to treat your fellow players with respect, and gracefully accept when you have been tagged or stunned.

Registration for The Escapist Expo is currently open, with 1-Day Passes available for purchase at $15 each, and complete 3-Day Passes at just $30.00 with additional discounts available for students and members of the military.
