Escaped Robeson County inmate surrenders
A search is underway for a Robeson County inmate who ran away from a community work program on Thursday afternoon.
Posted — UpdatedMatthew Oxendine, 36, escaped Thursday afternoon when a van carrying a work crew of four inmates made a stop, according a state Department of Correction representative. Oxendine is a minimum-security inmate at the Robeson Correctional Center in Lumberton.
He is serving time for a 2008 conviction for assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer, according to DOC officials. He was scheduled for release in May 2012.
DOC records show that Oxendine's criminal record, which dates to 1991, also includes convictions for assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a public official, breaking-and-entering and larceny.
