Get a Free, Energy-Efficient Light Bulb

Progress Energy will distribute 1,000 free compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) each day to State Fair attendees.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Progress Energy Carolinas will distribute 1,000 free compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) each day to State Fair attendees who sign the company’s Change a Light pledge.

As part of its energy-efficiency education program, the company is urging people to take the pledge and commit to replacing their five most-used bulbs with CFLs, increasing the energy efficiency of their homes and saving money in the process.

“Something as small as replacing a standard light bulb with a compact fluorescent bulb can greatly reduce our customers’ electricity usage and their monthly bills,” said Lloyd Yates, president and CEO of Progress Energy Carolinas. “

Installing just one compact fluorescent bulb can save more than $30 in energy costs over that bulb’s lifetime, according to ENERGY STAR, a joint program between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.

In addition to the free bulbs, Progress Energy will be distributing information about other changes consumers can make in their homes to save energy and lower their electric bill.

The company began offering a discount Oct. 1 on certain packages of energy-efficient bulbs at select Home Depot stores in the company’s service territory. Packages of two and four CFLs are priced as low as $0.99 per bulb, while supplies last.
