ENFIELD, N.C. — A former Enfield police officer was indicted Wednesday on 58 counts of possessing child pornography.

Officer Willie Cleveland Murphy turned himself into Halifax County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday. Authorities said the charges stem from an investigation that started in 2020 from information received about second-degree exploitation of a child.

The sheriff's office said electronic devices taken from Murphy's home in September 2020 contained child porn. Following a digital forensic examination, investigators testified in front of a grand jury on Monday.

Murphy was released on a $10,000 bond and will appear in court in October.

Previously, Murphy was indicted on embezzlement charges.

Investigators said multiple items of unsealed evidence belonging to the Enfield Police Department, as well as marijuana and paraphernalia were also found. All unsealed and empty evidence packaging was seized by the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff's office said Murphy was terminated on Aug. 4, 2020, the day of the search warrant. On Wednesday, the sheriff's office said charges were still pending from his arrest in 2020.
