ENFIELD, N.C. — Enfield police said Wednesday that they arrested a suspect in a shooting that happened during a fight early Saturday in the Halifax County town.

Jeffrey Clark Jr., of Enfield, was arrested at a home on Tucker Street and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

An unidentified man was shot in the upper area of both legs, police said, and was taken to a local hospital and later released. Investigators said his injuries could have been fatal.

According to police, the shooting was the result of an altercation that, witnesses said, started at K's Lounge on South McDaniel Street and continued into the street.

The owner of K's Lounge, Karva Whitaker, said there were no fights or verbal altercation inside his club that morning.

Police said that an officer heard multiple gunshots around 2:30 a.m., and when police arrived at the scene, they heard several additional gunshots and saw a man fleeing the scene on foot.

Police later arrested Clark, who was in the Halifax County jail Wednesday morning under a $50,000 secured bond.
