Elm City residents clean up after storm
Elm City residents spent Wednesday cleaning up after storms rolled through central and eastern North Carolina Tuesday evening.
Posted — UpdatedBrenda O'Neal was in her home with her granddaughter when she heard the strong winds.
"All of a sudden we heard a sound and it got louder and louder, and it felt like something hit the house," she said. "She said 'grandma, what is that?' She held on to me and I held on to her and then we came outside and the building was blown away and twisted around."
An out-building was blown down and a nearby out-building was moved off its foundation, according to the National Weather Service.
Down the street, Jimmy Poythress' home also suffered damage.
"All of a sudden it just felt like my house was just being peppered with debris, and then about 30 or 40 minutes later we walked outside and I noticed my awnings were gone," he said.
The damage was caused by straight line winds, the National Weather Service said.
"Oh, it was scary," O'Neal said. "I was scared to death."
The damage was not widespread, Wilson County officials said.
