PRINCETON, N.C. — An elderly woman was found dead Monday evening after her bed caught fire in a Princeton retirement community, Johnston County officials said.

The fire was contained to her apartment bedroom at Princeton Place, at 410 W. 3rd St. It didn't spread to any other rooms in the apartment and no other units were damaged.

Family members of the victim, 75-year-old Iris Toleito, discovered the fire around 6:30 p.m., police said. By that time, the blaze had put itself out.

Toleito, who lived alone with her cat, was dead when firefighters arrived at the scene. The cat was not harmed.

Police said the cause of the fire was still under investigation, but that it was not electrical. Toleito was a smoker and cigarette butts were found in the apartment, but police aren't certain whether a cigarette could have sparked the blaze.

Her body was sent to the coroner's office in Smithfield to determine whether she died as result of the fire or if she died before it started.
