Early-morning rain moves out; more showers, storms possible Wednesday afternoon
After early-morning showers pushed through the area, much of central and eastern North Carolina will be dry through midday Wednesday before afternoon heat helps generate another round of precipitation.
Posted — Updated"Some of the rain we saw before sunrise today was pretty intense, but it's slacked off in many areas as it continues to move from west to east across the area," WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said. "We'll get a little lull in the action through at least early afternoon."
Variably cloudy skies will allow temperatures to climb into the mid-and upper-80s by Wednesday afternoon, and the chances for rain will tick up after lunchtime. Rain chances will peak at about 50 percent between 3 and 8 p.m., Gardner said.
"We've got a good flow of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, and the heat of the day will help fuel another shot of showers and storms," she said. "We're not expecting any widespread severe weather, but heavy downpours are possible with some of these storms."
A similar pattern will unfold on Thursday as a cold front approaches the area.
"After this front passes late Thursday night and into Friday, most of our viewing area will start to dry out as the work week comes to a close," Gardner said.
Drier conditions will arrive for the weekend, and increased sun will allow daytime highs to reach the low 90s both Saturday and Sunday.
