DURHAM, N.C. — Thousands of Durham residents will soon get a call to remind them about mandatory water restrictions.

Mandatory water restrictions went into effect about two weeks ago. Since then, water consumption has dropped about 12 percent, officials said.

Durham is using an automated system to contact about 80,000 homes in the city to remind residents of the restrictions. Thirty-eight people have been warned about violating the restrictions.

Lake Michie and the Little River Reservoir, the two primary sources of drinking water for Durham, are both down about 14 feet from normal levels, officials said.
