Durham police officer charged with assaulting wife

A Durham police officer has been placed on administrative leave after being charged with assault, police said Wednesday.

DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham police officer has been placed on administrative leave after being charged with assault, police said Wednesday.

Cpl. James John Cartwright, 41, of Knightdale, was charged with assault on a female and interfering with emergency communications.

Wake County deputies said Cartwright's wife alleged that he assaulted her Tuesday night in their car on Interstate 440.

Cartwright has been employed by the Durham Police Department since 1998 and is assigned to the Patrol Bureau.
