DURHAM, N.C. — A man died Tuesday morning in a shooting behind police headquarters in downtown Durham, authorities said.

The shooting happened at about 11 a.m. after authorities said a car crashed into another car, hit a wall and ended up in the headquarters parking lot. Police said Jeremy Darnell Artis, 21, of Marietta, Ga., got out of the car and ran toward Gordon Street, where he shot himself. Officials said the man died from what appears to be a self-inflicted wound.

Authorities said a woman remained in the car during the incident. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment and was later released.

Gunfire was not exchanged between the man and police officers, investigators said.

Vickers Avenue was closed between Chapel Hill Street and Jackson Street following the shooting.

The investigation is ongoing.
