DURHAM, N.C. — A suspected shoplifter attempting to evade police caused two wrecks in Durham Friday before he was caught, police said.

The suspect, whom police did not identify, ran from the Rugged Warehouse on Westgate Drive. Officers in the area chased him on foot, but he got in a car and drove out of the parking lot, hitting one car along the way, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said.

He drove approximately 50 more yards on University Drive before colliding with a vehicle at Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway.

The suspect had a cut on his head and was taken to Duke hospitals for treatment. No one else was injured.

Police blocked off the access to Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway while a work crew replaced a damaged signal pole. The area was re-opened to traffic before 4 p.m.
