DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police arrested three men on armed robbery charges Thursday after a brief chase near the Duke University campus.

Officers linked a red van stopped for a traffic violation to the report of a robbery at an apartment complex at 3600 Tremont Drive, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said.

When police stopped the van near the intersection of Science Drive and N.C. Highway 751, the occupants jumped out and ran. Three were caught shortly thereafter and were being questioned by investigators Thursday afternoon, Michael said.

A fourth suspect escaped into the woods near the R. David Thomas Executive Conference Center on Science Drive, Duke campus security said. He was still at large by late afternoon when police called off their search.

Authorities did not release the names or descriptions of any of the suspects.
