Durham PD: Boy bullied, not sexually assaulted, on school bus

Detectives with the Durham Police Department's Special Victims Unit started investigating after a woman reported that a group of 10-year-olds pulled down her 5-year-old son's pants and assaulted him on his way home from W.G. Pearson Magnet Elementary School.

Durham police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said officers investigating the case, as well as two other similar reports, interviewed more than 20 people, including the children, before reaching their conclusions.

"Through these interviews, investigators were able to determine that no sexual or physical assaults occurred and no one's clothes ever came off," Michael said in a statement. "However, it was determined that some bullying and horseplay did occur."

Police turned over their findings to the Durham County District Attorney's Office, which determined no criminal acts occurred.

Chrissy Pearson, chief communications officer for Durham Public Schools, said in a statement that the school system is still investigating the claims and is awaiting a full report from police.

'We have been concerned for our students, and while we are relieved that criminal charges appear not to be warranted, we are wrapping up our own school-based investigation to determine what additional actions or supports need to be in place for the students involved," she said.
