DURHAM, N.C. — City officials dedicated a downtown transportation center Monday to serve as Durham's hub for local and regional bus service and taxi service.

About 90 percent of Durham Area Transit Authority's passengers are expected to travel through the $17.5 million station, at 515 W. Pettigrew St. The two-story, 10,300-square-foot building include 20 canopied bus bays, six parking spaces for cabs and a "kiss-and-ride" drop-off location.

The transportation center sits on the site of the former Heart of Durham Hotel, which was demolished five years ago after sitting vacant for several years.
