DURHAM, N.C. — Four men face charges after a police office was dragged about 100 yards during a traffic stop Thursday afternoon, according to the Durham Police Department.

Officer T.A. Stanhope was treated for minor injuries and released from Durham Regional Hospital Thursday evening. He was expected to return to full duty Friday, said Cpl. M.C. Walkowe.

Police stopped a vehicle, occupied by four men, for a traffic violation shortly before 3:30 p.m. at Ninth Street near West Main Street, near Duke University's East Campus.

As officers questioned the driver, a passenger jumped into the driver’s seat and started to drive away, dragging Stanhope with the vehicle.

As the vehicle went across the intersection toward Erwin Road, it ran up over a curb and into bushes. The car landed partially on its side, and all four occupants fled. Officers chased the four men on foot and apprehended them. Officers found burglary tools inside the vehicle.

Antonio Milligan, 22, of Owen Street, Kirk Chandler, 18, of Hepowil Trace in Hillsborough, Richard Jebb, 21, of Clarendon Street and Brandon Handy, 17, of Lebanon Road in Mebane were each charged with possession of burglary tools.

Milligan was also charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, one count of felony hit-and-run and one count of resisting, delaying and obstructing an officer. Jebb was also charged with resisting, delaying and obstructing an officer.

At the time, Milligan was listed as an absconder from probation in Orange County by the state Department of Correction. He had been sentenced to 24 months probation in January for speeding to elude arrest and driving on a revoked license.

He served seven months in prison in 2007 for larceny and violating an earlier probation for drug possession with intent to sell.
