Durham Moves Garbage Collections Up to Beat Heat
Durham is adjusting its residential solid waste, yard waste and recycling collection schedules to begin earlier each day. Officials said they hope the change will protect workers from heat-related injuries.
Posted — UpdatedFrom Monday, July 16, through Friday, Sept. 14, sanitation crews will arrive at least an hour before the scheduled 7 a.m. garbage pick-up, officials said. Residents are asked to place their carts on the curb the night before their normal pick-up day.
“Safeguarding our collectors’ health is the primary reason for this temporary schedule change,” Donald Long, director of the Department of Solid Waste Management, said in a statement. “Although we provide safety training on how to cope with extreme heat, such as drinking plenty of fluids and avoiding overexertion, we know the best way to avoid heat injury is to limit the amount of time our employees are exposed to extreme temperatures.”
If pick-ups are missed on a regular collection day, residents should leave their carts at the curb an extra day before contacting Durham One Call at 919-560-1200 to report the missed pick-up, Long said.
Commercial solid waste collection times will remain unchanged during the summer.
