DURHAM, N.C. — With days to go before its Christmas event, the Durham Rescue Mission said it is short of 1,000 toys for children in-need.

More than 3,000 people are expected to attend Wednesday’s holiday event, which provides toys and meals for those in need.

Last year, the mission gave away more than 7,000 toys and served more than 3,000 meals.

Due to the downturn in the economy, all mission events this year have broken attendance records, officials said.

Toys can be dropped off at:

Toys for Tots meets it goal

Toys for Tots of Raleigh has met its goal for toys, officials said Monday.

The charity was short on toys last week, but after appearing on WRAL-News, spokesman Lee Cox said donations flooded in.

The group provides three toys an outfit and a stocking filled with goodies for each child.

The Salvation Army will provide Christmas gifts to 5,500 children this year.
