Durham man wanted in December shooting arrested after standoff

A 23-year-old man wanted in connection with a Dec. 26 shooting at a shopping center on Avondale Drive was taken into custody late Thursday after a two-and-a-half-hour standoff, Durham police said.

DURHAM, N.C. — A 23-year-old man wanted in connection with a Dec. 26 shooting at a shopping center on Avondale Drive was taken into custody late Thursday after a two-and-a-half-hour standoff, Durham police said.

Messiah Gattis is charged with injury to property, assault with a deadly with intent to kill, carrying a concealed weapon, going armed to the terror of the public, discharging a firearm from an enclosure, 10 counts of discharging a firearm within the city limits and resisting, delaying and obstructing an officer.

Investigators went to an apartment at 322 Junction Road at about 6:20 p.m. Thursday, and Gattis refused to come out of an apartment. He surrendered at about 9 p.m., police said.

Police said Gattis is responsible for a shooting that happened after an argument at a shopping center on Avondale Drive. No one was injured in the shooting, but a vehicle was damaged.

Gattis was in the Durham County jail Friday under a $101,000 bond.
