DURHAM, N.C. — A 34-year-old Durham man died Wednesday afternoon after crashing his motorcycle into a pickup truck on N.C. Highway 55 at South Alston Avenue, police said.

Authorities say Octavius Lavone Blackwell was driving north on a Yamaha motorcycle at about 3 p.m. when he lost control and hit a Ford F-150 being driven southbound by 77-year-old Willie Lee, of Durham. Authorities say the collision happened as Lee was attempting to make a left turn onto South Alston Avenue.

Blackwell was ejected from his bike in the wreck and pronounced dead at the scene. Lee was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and later released.

No charges have been filed, but an investigation of the wreck is ongoing. Authorities believe speed was a factor in the wreck.

N.C. 55 was closed between Burlington Avenue and Dayton Street for several hours while crews cleaned up the scene.
