Durham hosts international parenting expert for free seminar

Sanders will speak from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, at World Overcomers Christian Church, 2933 S. Miami Blvd., Durham. Free childcare and dinner will be provided for participants. It's open to the public.

The seminar is part of a new program at the Durham County Department of Public Health. Durham County was recently awarded a grant to offer the evidence-based Triple P parenting education and support to every family in the county, according to a press release. The department's Triple P Initiative is moving forward and will host its first Triple P Level 3 Primary Care training in June 2014.

Sanders' seminar, titled "The Power of Positive Parenting," is for parents with kids between birth and age 12. Sanders is based in Brisbane, Australia where he is director of the Parenting and Family Support Centre at the University of Queensland. He also serves as a visiting professor at Manchester University, the University of South Carolina, Glasgow Caledonian University and the University of Auckland. 

"Triple P seminars are packed with simple strategies to help make raising kids easier and presented in a relaxed setting that tackles some of the most common family concerns about parenting," according to the release. "At the end of the seminar, participants will take home a tip sheet to serve as a reminder of all the great ideas presented."

According to the release: "Sanders' evidence-based Triple P parenting system has helped approximately six million children and their families. It is used in 25 countries and has been translated into 17 languages. More than 55,000 practitioners have been trained it its delivery."
