DURHAM, N.C. — Durham County property owners are asked to be on the lookout for a mailing that is currently circulating offering property owners a certified copy of their property deed for a payment of $59.50.

The Register of Deeds office in Durham County said residents have contacted them about a company called National Deed Service, Inc. based in Washington, DC that has sent letters to property owners, offering a copy of their deed for their higher price.

The correspondence creates an urgency about securing the service by saying “Due to a large number of transactions, this will be your only notice of our service”.

The average price of a certified copy of a typical two- to three-page deed is about $10.00 and may be obtained in the Durham County Register of Deeds office.

Other counties across the country have reported letters sent from this company.
