FAISON, N.C. — The fire that burned an estimated 10 million pounds of sweet potatoes in a Duplin County warehouse has been contained, said Duplin County Emergency Services director Brian Pearce.

More than 60 fire departments and hundreds of firefighters from at least six counties fought the fire at Southern Produce Distributors, 111 West Center St. for more than 24 hours after it ignited Sunday evening, authorities said.

Twenty fire departments and about 75 firefighters were monitoring hot spots Tuesday. Pearce said firefighters would be on the scene for the rest of the week.

The fire was contained to the 40,000-square-foot section of the 120,000-square-foot warehouse, he said.
