DURHAM, N.C. — Duke University police are investigating a student's report that he was robbed early Wednesday as he walked along a trail in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens.

The student said he walked into the gardens around 6:30 a.m. at the Lewis Street entrance off Anderson Street when a man approached him and asked for money, according to police.

When the student refused, the man came toward him in a threatening manner with a knife and the two began to struggle, according to the report he gave police.

The man then grabbed the student’s cell phone, which had fallen on the ground, and ran away, police said.

The student was not injured. Police did not release his name.

The man is described as a black man, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a slender build and a dark complexion. He was wearing a black ski cap, black gloves, a black hooded jacket and dark sweat pants.
