The Duke Endowment is giving $100,000 to aid the development of rural United Methodist churches, the foundation announced Tuesday.

<b>RALEIGH, N.C.</b> — The Duke Endowment is giving $100,000 to aid the development of rural United Methodist churches, the foundation announced Tuesday.<br />

The grant was awarded to the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, which will use the funding to support Stop Hunger Now's &quot;Operation Sharehouse&quot; program in Goldsboro with a mobile food-packaging unit for use in six surrounding counties. <br />

The Operation Sharehouse program enables church and community volunteers to package high-protein dehydrated meals to feed those in need. In 2006, 5,200 volunteers in Raleigh, Charlotte and South Hill, Va., packaged more than 1.7 million meals.
