RALEIGH, N.C. — The Duke Endowment is giving $100,000 to aid the development of rural United Methodist churches, the foundation announced Tuesday.

The grant was awarded to the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, which will use the funding to support Stop Hunger Now's "Operation Sharehouse" program in Goldsboro with a mobile food-packaging unit for use in six surrounding counties.

The Operation Sharehouse program enables church and community volunteers to package high-protein dehydrated meals to feed those in need. In 2006, 5,200 volunteers in Raleigh, Charlotte and South Hill, Va., packaged more than 1.7 million meals.
