<b>RALEIGH, N.C.</b> — The statewide drought has led to an increased number of wildfires in North Carolina this year, officials said.

There have been 6,380 wildfires this year, burning more than 34,761 acres. The average for the last 10 years is 4,931 wildfires with 20,008 acres burned, according to state Division of Forest Resources.

A statewide burning ban has been in effect since October to help prevent brushfires from being sparked.
