RALEIGH, N.C. — Hobbyists got a crash course in drone technology Saturday, with hands-on lessons in flying the remote-controlled aircraft offered at Dorothea Dix field in Raleigh.

A local distributor was on hand to offer advice about benefits and uses of drones.

"This is taking our leisure flying on the weekends to a totally different level," said Tate McQueen.

The subject of drones – their legality, privacy and safety concerns – is top of mind for lawmakers and regulators nationwide. Current law limits recreational drones to fly no higher than 500 feet and to avoid any area within 5 miles of an airport.
