Driver hits, kills worker on I-95 near Lumberton; second worker injured

A construction worker died early Thursday morning and another was seriously injured after being hit by a vehicle on Interstate-95 near Lumberton.

LUMBERTON, N.C. — A construction worker died early Thursday morning and another was seriously injured after being hit by a vehicle on Interstate 95 near Lumberton.

Officers from the Lumberton Police Department were dispatched just before 5 a.m. and found two Stay Alert Safety Security Workers were struck by a passing motorist. One worker was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other was transported to Southeastern Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

Officials said the workers were struck in the northbound lane of I-95 around the 16 mile marker.

The names of the workers and the driver were not released.
