DURHAM, N.C. — Durham homicide investigators were called to the scene of a single-car crash Saturday afternoon to figure out how the driver died.

Kammie Michael, a spokeswoman for the Durham Police Department, said the car was exiting the Durham Freeway (N.C. Highway 147) at Fayetteville Road when it went through a fence and hit a tree.

The driver, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene, Michael said. He appeared to have been shot.

Anyone who may have seen the wreck, which took place around 4:30 p.m., is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases and callers never have to identify themselves.
