PINEBLUFF, N.C. — A Moore County woman died Thursday morning after she tried to race a train at a crossing on Pinebluff Lake Road.
State troopers said 52-year-old Aliksa Ersksa Mongkeya of Countryside Drive drove around railroad crossing gate, which was down, and was hit by a northbound Amtrak train. According to the State Highway Patrol, Mongkeya's 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe was pinned between two trains and dragged for several hundred feet.

Mongkeya, the only person in the SUV, had to be cut free from the heavily damaged vehicle.

The Amtrak train was carrying 82 passengers, and no injuries were reported. Passengers were loaded onto buses and carried to their final destination.

Pinebluff Lake Road between U.S. Highway 15/501 and U.S. Highway 1 was closed as emergency responders investigated the accident and removed the remains of the mangled vehicle.

The engine of the train was damaged in the crash.
