MORRISVILLE, N.C. — Airlines canceled more than 50 flights from Raleigh-Durham International Airport on Monday because of a winter storm that hit the East Coast, airport spokeswoman Minday Hamlin said.

Most of the canceled flights were headed to or were coming from cities in the Northeast, including New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C., Hamlin said.

The cancellations are expected to ripple through the rest of Monday's flight schedule, she said, adding the travelers should check the status of their flights with the airlines before heading to RDU.

Crews swept and treated runways all night, and airlines de-iced jets to keep flights to other destinations on schedule as much as possible, she said.
