WAKE FOREST, N.C. — The state Department of Transportation will make improvements to a local road where a Cary Academy student recently was killed in an automobile crash, authorities said Tuesday.

Johnnetta Camile Overton, 17, ran off Ligon Mill Road in her vehicle on May 11 and overcorrected, swerving into the path of an oncoming truck, police said. Police said preliminary reports show alcohol and speed were not factors in the crash.

People who live in the area said accidents on that stretch of road aren't uncommon. Several accidents have been reported in the area, including one just two hours after the crash that killed Overton.

Because of that, the DOT plans to improve the shoulders of the road and install new warning signs to ensure drivers approaching a bend in the road exercise caution, DOT spokeswoman Lisa Crawley said.
